The Resilient Educator™ Workshop
Skills to Succeed and Flourish in Today's Schools

Have you noticed that today it takes more energy and stamina to teach successfully? Whether it's mastering
new subject matter, addressing diverse student needs, implementing assessments, learning new technology,
maintaining classroom order, managing time, or making sure all students learn, the demands on teachers are
increasing in number and intensity.

The Resilient Educator™ is a powerful, highly relevant training program that helps educators boost
performance, improve school relationships, and strengthen resiliency. Acclaimed by educators for its new
ideas and solid foundation in neuroscience, the program's proven techniques are easy to learn and help
rekindle educators' motivation and energy. Drawing on the Institute of HeartMath's fifteen years of scientific
research, this training engages educators through practical, research-based approach.

What Participants Learn:

• How to think more clearly and make smarter decisions, especially under pressure.
• How to improve communication with staff, students and parents.
• How to transform the physiological response to stress.
• How to increase vitality and well being.
• How to create a stronger school culture.

Proven Results

Three months after school administrators and K-12 teachers from a Kentucky school district received
training, symptoms of stress had dropped dramatically. Prior to the training, 34% of the participants said that
they felt exhausted. Three months after the training that number had dropped to only 11%. Those who said
they felt like quitting their job dropped from 21% to 14% during the same three-month period.

“After working with a group of children who had been molested by an employee
at a day care center, I placed my own child in such a center. The staff there may
have thought I was a bit perverse when I wanted to see the bathrooms and know
the details of their routine for taking children to the bathroom. But it is simply
that I possessed the knowledge that comes from listening to abuse survivors, I
know what can happen.”

Knowing what can happen is both a blessing and a curse, but sometimes this
knowledge can itself become a distortion. If we lose our sense of perspective,
then our awareness of danger can transform into an expectation of danger--every
plane is likely to crash and every adult is likely to hurt a child. When we lose our
perspective in this way, we enter the world of the traumatized. We stay
constantly on our guard because we anticipate danger at every turn. If we are not
able to regain our sense of perspective, then the next step is avoidance and our
lives becomes organized around what might happen, rather than what is
happening. This is the point where secondary exposure triggers secondary
traumatization.
Workshop Participants Learn:

The differences between secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout.
The four core life assumptions distorted by secondary trauma.
How trauma reactions differ culturally and ethnically.
    • How to transform the physiological response to stress to improve resiliency.
    • How to increase vitality and well being.
    • How to leave work at work.
    • How to create a stronger, more supportive workplace culture to improve organizational resiliency.
Demonstration of the Freeze-Framer® Interactive Learning System as a stress reduction tool

Understanding Secondary Trauma:  Self Care for Helping Professionals

Just as the trauma survivor becomes aware of dangers that he or she previously ignored, those who listen to
a survivor's story come to see the world differently as well. This usually leads to changes in the way we
approach our lives. Workers who help plane crash survivors may learn to pay more attention to the location
of the emergency exits when they fly—just as firemen are more attuned to escape routes in their own homes.
Understanding Secondary Trauma:  Self Care for Helping Professionals is a powerful transformative
workshop for helping professionals -- social workers, therapists, emergency workers, nurses, or crisis
advocates to recover from compassion fatigue or vicarious trauma, return to pre-burnout performance,
improve relationships at work and at home, and strengthen resiliency. The program teaches easy-to-use
techniques that help restore personal meaning and rekindle motivation.
Diversity and Intercultural Competence Workshop

A diverse workplace is inclusive of all our human differences:  race, gender, age, sexual identity,
nationality/geo-cultural identity, disability, size, or religious orientation. A diversity issue exists when an
issue, policy or business practice, or specific incident has a different impact on a particular group (i.e.,
impact on men vs. women, black vs. white, national vs. foreign, urban vs. rural, married vs. single, etc.).
Having a diversity issue is not necessarily a bad thing. Not addressing the problem is where organizations
go awry. Being in denial about these issues do not make them go away. The real task is to find out why it
exists and what action can correct it or improve the situation.

The Diversity and Intercultural Competence Workshop fosters understanding and acceptance in a
practical and nonconfrontational manner, of how differences may effect or influence our relationships at
work -- peers, subordinate, supervisor, and customers --  intentionally or unintentionally.
